This is an old revision of the document!

Seeing Things Which Are There is a nonlinear self-contained DOOM megawad about unreality, trauma, struggles with vivid memories and dreams, living through an apocalypse, and loneliness.

MECHANICS

Unlike many Doom wads, the game is not a boomer shooter, or a bullet hell, but a survival horror game. Combat is slow, methodical, and often more of a puzzle than a skilled encounter. It's also nonlinear, more like Heretic or Hexen, with qualitative storytelling elements.

Doom INTERPICs are used to communicate monologs from Abaddon to Termite.

Weapons

Journal

Summons the Storytelling screen, which tracks as qualities and lists their current status - although not their number!

The Knife

A raven-headed knife (photographed from my real one) which Termite used to remove her left and right arms. Melee range, can kill Easy enemies in about five hits. Capable of destroying props, tape, etc.

Killing an enemy with The Knife raises Cut By The Blade by one.

UNLOCKS: Caution tape

The Shovel

Earned by killing The March. Does bonus damage against Rebel Against Judgement.

WALKTHROUGH

The player starts Beneath the Second Sky, below The Crucifixition, with Mulberry nearby. They have a short dialogue, where they are instructed to head down to the base of the mountain, to the shrine of The Matron.

You descend holy mountain and get the raven headed dagger. From there you can go to the frontrooms and the escarpment. The frontrooms hold the lair of the jabberwock. You can't get there without the broken glasses. The broken glasses you need to get from the poolrooms. Also in the poolrooms is a shrine to Abaddon. however if you collect the spurned candles from the village you can talk to Anacra at the shrine. Using the glasses you can reach the lair of the jabberwock, where you can kill it to fight March. once you have March's shovel you can descend.

Qualities

Cut By The Blade: 2 = You started here, when you removed them. 4 = And you hoped that if you removed more you'd feel better. 8 = But cutting didn't help. 16 = You just felt more empty.

CHARACTERS

Termite

Termite is the player character, an ambiguous black shadow with androgynous shape (me). She is intersex and when she was twelve she sprouted two extra arms. Two of her arms are “masculine” and two are “feminine”.

She cut off her masculine arms with a raven-headed knife, and offered them to Abaddon in exchange for a night without dreams. Instead, she woke up here.

Mulberry

A vulture with an acidic disposition. It doesn't trust the walls. Speaks like an old Shakespearean player.

March

A long-forgotten player from a previous era. Failed child of The Matron. Quiet, unsure of himself, but slowly building resentment of Termite. This escalates until he is corrupted by Anacra, who preys on his shame for disappointing his mother.

She

Termite's dead lover. They last spoke in a horrible argument, when She was deeply unstable and Termite said something that caused her to storm off. She then killed herself.

I'm not quite sure what capacity she is going to be here yet, but it feels important

Goetia

Those who must be reunited to escape this place. Each must be found in their unreal moor, confronted, defeated, and reintegrated.

Correspondents

A DEVOTION OF FIRE

A vulture skull with candles for eyes atop a black robed body without any limbs.

SCULPTOR OF FLESH

A cow head on a naked intersex body. The body is composed of Adam and Aphrodite. The bull is the minotaur of Rhodes.

DEFIER OF JUDGEMENT

A deer skull with antlers made of hands, where the hands all alternate between: ✊, 🤘, 🤟

BEGINNING WITH DEATH

A shadow on concrete.

I AM, REGARDLESS

An isopod with human fingers.

THINGS WHICH ARE THERE

The narrator. Only visible in dialogue trees and corrupted spaces. Most often a sigil, sometimes a gendeless figure with only the top half of their head.

Remnants

Termite must regain what she lost.

The Left Hand

You cast me out, so I cast you down. You are less without me. I hate you. I need you.

The Right Hand

I cast you down, so you cast me out. Maybe it was for the best. I love you. You don't need me.

Abyssals

Abaddon

DOMAIN: L6 - The Depths Ruler of Arms. He corrupted Termite's arms by whispering in her ear while she cried in the dark.

“I have been with you since you first shed tears from that blessed body. Since your arms grew like fresh branches on a yew tree. Can you remember which you cut off? You think they're the bad ones. I think they're the good ones. Your matron loved all of them.” - Abaddon

SPIRITUS: Schadenfreud, essentialism, misery, loneliness, tears, pain.

Anacra

DOMAIN: L5

The prince of wax. The flesh succumbing. The ever-candle. Has kidnapped DEVOTION OF FIRE to try and gain leverage over Termite

SPIRITUS: Shame, sin, wastefulness, useless, surrender

PROGRESSION

Act 1 - Alice is Dead

Termite awakens at the Crucifixion. She meets mulberry, descends to the shrine of the matron, and receives the raven headed knife from her. She bumps into March. She then must head to the white lake to descend to the poolrooms so she can talk to Abaddon. She will learn that to get lower she will need a shovel to dig thru the matron's well, and that a monster from her past is living in the houses to the east. Abaddon will suggest taking off her glasses to look blurrily at some things, which will “give” her the glasses.

ENEMIES

Unlike most Doom wads, enemies in this game are primarily slow-moving, hulking things which take patience to defeat. It's a survival horror game, not an action game.

Heliocentrist

A fallen angel from The Chained Sky. Flies, hovering about half a height above Termite, and swooping down to attack her. Most efficiently fought with ranged attacks.

HOME: L5 - The Chained Sky HEALTH: Medium MOVEMENT: Flight ELEMENT: Light APPEARANCE: Biblical angel comprised of leveled photo remnants.

Denialist

Fallen angels from The Panopticon, they appear to be a crowd of individuals but are in fact one combined biomass, moving like inchworms and using each individual member like fingers.

HOME: L2 - The Panopticon HEALTH: Unkillable MOVEMENT: Crawling ELEMENT: Flesh APPPEARANCE: Conglomeration of figures from COVID photos.

Plague (Mechanic)

Every attack from a Denialist adds one Plague counter. When Termite has 50 Plague counters, she dies instantly. (This might be easiest to first implement as a standalone mod: Phyrexian Poison)

Comedians

Fallen angels from The Slate, they appear to be safety comic characters who have come to life.

HOME: L3 - The Slate HEALTH: Easy MOVEMENT: Default ELEMENT: Paper APPEARANCE: Cutouts of safety poster characters
